i think i haven't described what i want adequately. i want
to be able to wake up the modem, to put it in a state where it
will hear DTMF tones and voice, from a telephone handset. so
solutions that require sending commands via the serial port to
the modem, or sending signals to mgetty won't work. ideally the
modem would be only "half asleep", and would hear me dial "#9",
and it would wake up.
what's really needed of course is a device between all of my phones
and the telco which isolates me, and can possibly provide an internal ring
voltage, and which will connect me to the outside when i dial 9.
i think we call this device a PBX. :-)
