vgetty: hangup not recognised on USR

Is this an appropriate place for voice-extension questions?
If so, please read below, else where?

My USR sporster (US/Canada model) does not seem
to recognise our Australia "disconnected" tone,
and vgetty keeps recording until the tone stops
and it times out on silence.

 Is it possibly for vgetty to do anything about this?
The modem manual doesnt seem to have an answer.
