vgetty - newcomers question

Hi,
I'm using vgetty from two days. I have user previously the simple voice
package from sunsite (linres + vmcp). It has worked quite well winth my
old rockwell-like Cardinal 14.4 modem.
Now I'm testing vgetty from mgetty-1.1.14-2 (RH 5.1) on Solaris 2.6 x86.

I have installed it, like it was explained in the Readme.Beginners file
of vgetty. Now I'm playing with that with my Cardinal 14.4 and Zyxel
1496 modems.
The problems, quite basically, are:
1. I can't record and play messages with the modems above. If I put vm
record [-H] something, it gehalfs depending on the modem type: by the
rockwell based cardinal I get an information in vm.log, that the modem
isn't a rockwell one (however the vgetty itself detects it as
rockwell).; on Zyxel all seems to bye all right, I get no error messages
in the log files, the voice file is created and it has a reasonable
size, but if I try to play it, I hear nothing, nor on the telephone
neighter on the internal speaker of the modem.
2. If I record the message like above or call myself through the
telephone company and try to leave the message, the modems don't hang up
a long time after I hang up the telephone. Here it is differently for
both of my modems - while the Cardinal waits a reasonable time after I
have left the message through a telephone company (several seconds), the
Zyxel seems to not hang up at all (I didn't wait so long). If I record a
message through vm record, the Cardinal behalfs faster too. I heard, one
have to play with the silence detection and noise values, I have tried
some values, it have nothing changed. Maybe because I get a "busy"
signal, after I hang up the phone (no difference, if I call or record a
message locally).
I can send You my log files, if they where helpful. But first I expect
some basically answers from You, what can I do myself, to let my vgetty
work with the above modems and how to detect errors. Both vm and vgetty
are binary packages, so I can't see and decide, which AT commands are
sent to my modem and what my modem answers or what the programs expect
to. So what to do, to let the modem hang up and not wait for a very long
time, after somebody has called it and what to do, to hear and record my
messages? Are there differences between the modems in the voice file
format?
If I should read someting or my questions were to simple, so tell me,
where to look for the information, besides the Readme.Beginners file.
Ready and working conf files where good to ... Don't be aware to write
me some more words than RTFM :-)
If You would prefer German or Polish - its not a problem. I look
sometimes at this discussion list, but I would be glad, If You would
send a copy to my personal mail box.
