I'd say it's a serial port/serial cabling problem.  Mgetty doesn't really
do anything unusual here, nothing that hasn't been in the code unchanged
since at least a year or so.

That would be my guess.  Loose cable, flakey chip (on-board serial ports
tend to be very low-quality junk nowadays).
