Hmmm, that would be news to me. I have seen many problems in page
creation, but pbmtext has never been among them. What did you bring to
that conclusion?

Hmmm, there are only two pbm (source) distributions, pbmplus and netpbm.
In both cases, pbmtext seems to work Just Fine. pbmplus can be found in
the FTP directory on LEO.
Dunno about precompiled Linux binaries, as I don't use them.

The file name will tell you - fn is normal res, ff is fine res.

Please always report the exact version number, as "the latest version"
might have changed while you haven't been looking.

I'd rather look there for problems - the USR Sportsters have been fairly
flakey for fax sending. Anyway, could you please send me the complete
set of ATI codes for this modem? Go to the mgetty source tree, to the
"tools/" subdirectory, and run the "mid" program in there, like this:
./mid ttyS0
(or wherever your modem is connected). If that works, run
./mid -m ttyS0
