Just as a side note: in mgetty 1.1.17 and up, you'll find a program called
"mid" in mgetty/tools/.  You call it like this:

   mgetty/tools/mid ttyS2

and it will check all the ATI codes of your modem on ttyS2.

Calling it as "mid -m ttyS2" will automagically mail the output to me :-)
