Help!

Hello there Linux Gurus!!

We are using mgetty 1.1.9 here on linux 2.0.30.
I tried telneting to our router and dialing up to a modem connected to
com1 (we're using USR) of my linux box. Now, I receive the login prompt,
type my username,but when I press enter, no more password prompt would 
follow.
Strangely, when I edit the password file and delete the "x" representing
the shadowed password, the login process would be successful --- with
the absence of password authentication.
