Hmmm. What I'm looking for isn't there (the status of the serial port
lines), but that's easy to explain:

you're using a mgetty version that is over two years old. Get 1.1.18
from ftp://alpha.greenie.net/pub/mgetty/, and try again. Then send
the log file of ONE call (not the whole file!) with "-x5".
