Something bad. I'm not exactly sure when it happens, but it usually
means that somewhere deep in the guts of the T.30 fax protocol, your
modem and the other end disagreed.

Upgrading mgetty won't help, this is a modem thing. Getting a better
faxmodem would help, yes.

Unlikely, but let's see what the log says:

Do you really have that text here, or do you just try to hide your phone
number?

In any case: there IS a misconfiguration here, the modem and the host
are getting out of sync (you see the echo of command "ATxyz" not
after this command, but after the *next* command in chain!). I think
your modem returns two "OK" strings after "ATI2" or something like this,
so you'll have to wait for that in the "statistics" sequence (or disable
it completely for testing).
I don't think it's related to your problems, but it's bad anyway.

This could just hint at "I want to use 'switchbd 19200'". Definitely
looks like wrong baud rate.
