Well it couldn't while in data mode. It could be done either in command
mode or voice mode using DLE characters. Though you're right, it would be a
hack. Just the same though, a lot is using FSK now on those screen phones.=

I'm surprised modems don't support it yet. There are serial devices that do
it but all with proprietary protocols.
