Line in use?

Hi,

Is there any way to tell when v/mgetty is using the phone line (from the point 
at which the phone is ringing, to the end point at which it hangs up after a fax 
or voice call?)

I have many workstations that I'd like to notify when the line is in use (so 
they don't interrupt current connections).  Is there a signal file somewhere 
that would let me know when the line is in use, and when it is free to use?

I was thinking about using cnd-program and fax_notify/voice notify scripts, but 
those only run on successful new faxes/voice messages.  When the log indicates a 
'waiting...' I think this is the only point at which the line will be free to 
use. Is this true?  Is there any reliable way to know when the line is in use 
and when it is free to use?
