This is weird.  It could mean that the modem changed baud rates (there's a
"bitfax bug compatibility" register somewhere, which makes the modem do
weird things with its baud rate in fax mode).

Try doing a full factory reset (power off, press D/V, hold, power on,
wait 5 secs., release D/V, wait 10 secs., power-cycle again), and see
whether that improves things.  If not, you might have a problem with your
Eproms (too slow eproms, bit rot, whatever).
