The I/O error is pretty harmless, as I said before (and as is documented
in the FAQ). The fact that it's logged as an error at all is due to some
bad layering issues in the code (the low level code doesn't know that it's
harmless, so it has to complain).

Sounds like a modem / application issue. As soon as the user is online,
mgetty doesn't come into play anymore - it is restarted *after* logout.

This means, something in your system has thrown out the user -- because
the carrier detect signal is still there after the user has left. No, I
don't have any suggestion what to look for. Maybe bad serial cables.
