mgetty and modem error

This is easy - read the manual :-)  (run mgetty from /etc/inittab, not
from the command line).

And do NOT send us log files showing that you aborted a running mgetty
with ctrl-c.  They are absolutely useless to determine *anything* besides
the fact that you interfered with the normal flow of things.
