There should be a command (AT&V1 for newer Rockwell modems) that will show
you why the modem disconnected.
If I remember correctly, most modems will drop the connections after a
certain number of re-sends has occurred. The exact number is sometimes set
in an S-register but of course you probably can't change your ISP's
S-registers. Also, some modems are slightly more aggressive than others about
what speed they connect at, thus trading a slightly higher connect speed for
a larger number of errors/re-sends. You might be able to set this
aggressiveness in an S-register as well. FWIW my older Supra Sonic (Rockwell
based) used to get 4 - 7 days between drops so it is possible to do better
than 1 to 2 hours.
