Fax machine in Japan unable to connect

Sounds OK. Maybe you should reduce the number of RINGs (some faxes have
short timeouts, and dialing from japan to USA and waiting for 6 RINGs
might already take too long for a successful handshake).

Up to this point, everything is fine.

This usually means "the other end just went away" ("Unspecified Receive
Phase B error").
Can you receive faxes from other fax machines in the US?

This is interesting, it means "call aborted", but I'm not sure from which
side.

I'd try with less RINGs, and try receiving from other fax machines. Maybe
it will need a firmware upgrade for the Sportster, ask USR (their fax
firmware is not too good).
