Does g3topbm always work for you?

Off and on, I am unable to work with fax files that I receive since
g3topbm reports, for example,

[19:35:48][570][sharat-pc] [tools] g3topbm fn0b422b1em-65-7912687.01 > a.pbm

invalid code, row=991, col=1728, file offset=895b, skip to eol
invalid code, row=992, col=67, file offset=8975, skip to eol

The fax is received via a Practical Peripherals internal modem. Does
mgetty+sendfax do anything with the files received by the modem?

-- Is there a work around?

-- Is there a better fax --> gif/jpeg/ps/xxx format coverter?

-- Is the modem broken? How can I find out? I do receive some
messages fine.

Thanks for your help.
