Modems hanging up

Hello Gert,

Very good point. I will call them Monday and insist. I don't like the fact
that the same model # modems don't have the same init strings.

I am using gcc-2.7.2.3

Cyclades 2.1.1.9 is the latest greatest driver from cyclades. Beltram, the
technical support engineer at cyclades, told me that's why the second
sm16 box didn't work because the driver that ships with all linux versions
is old and doesn't work with 32 ports.

I would like to direct this to the MultiTech experts, I have a problem
with USR modems. When a USR modem is connected it will lose the connection
after a while and it seems to be related to the amount of data transferred.

High transfers will cause the modems to disconnect. I can cure a straight
USR (real modem) with an init of s15=128. This puts it into MNP5 instead
of v.42. The USR win modems won't take this string. The Gateway Telepath

is really bad at this (it is a oem'd by USR). I have found two strings
that
will possibly fix this. &M0 will turn off error correction and &M5 will
change
the error correction to MNP5. I found those init codes from the USR X2
winmodem
manual and have not had a chance to try it on more than two modems.

I guess my question is;

A. When and if I get the new modems should I set my modems to MNP5 ( I
can't
find an init code that will do that for the older modems) or will I run
into more
problems with modems that don't like this? This is supposed to be a less
efficient error correction then v.42.

B. Should I chuck these MultiTechs and get some other modem? Is there a
modem
that I should be using that would be better suited for this application?

C. Use USRs and take the chance that the MultiTechs and all other LT
modems
and some others won't work?

D. Is there something I am missing here?
