G3 to Tiff

Hello everybody,
I know this to be a common issue, but even in dejanews I did not find a
satisfying answer. When receiving a fax via mgetty I first tried to convert
it by the help of fax2tif (I am using SuSE 5.3), but got a lot of decoding
errors.
Now I use g32pbm | pbm2lps | gs -sDEVICE=tiff which seems to be a little bit
braindead for me, an attribute I wanted to reserve exclusively for
M$-solutions ;-).
Any hints
