vgetty: which 56K modem?

Hi,

I want to sell my trusty old 1496E and get a 56K modem. I'd appreciate
tips on the following:

1) Can anybody recommend a modem that works reliably with vgetty? Voice,
   fax, data -- I need it all. :)
2) Most 56Ks have audio in/out jacks for a phone headset. I'd like to
   take a cordless phone, take it apart and in some way feed pickup/hangup
   and audio information to the modem, so that the modem is the only thing
   that's connected to the phone socket (yes, the cabling in my flat _is_
   that complicated). Does anybody have experience with this or related
   endeavours?
