vgetty: which 56K modem?

I'm using an internal 3Com/USR voice faxmodem (model 5685), and it works
well.  The ONLY problem I've had so far is that the modem doesn't detect a
hang-up right away, so when a caller decides not to leave a message the
modem switches to fax/data mode for a minute and I end up getting an email
from the mgetty service saying that a fax receive failed....  Some people
have problems with this modem because it is PnP and has no documentation
for the jumpers on the board, but mine worked right out of the box.
