You're misunderstanding.  If mgetty can initialize the modem at bootup,
but fails later, it's NOT a mgetty problem.  Only if mgetty fails every
single time (!), then it's a mgetty problem - mgetty configuration is
all-or-nothing.

Sure.  Put the Right Things in there.  But that's NOT relevant to problems
like this one.

(Anyway: your mail is missing all the relevant data, that is, a detailed
mgetty log file, not only the "syslog" output)
