Sounds like a problem with your telephone cabling or modem.  The modem 
should certainly not interpret an outgoing phone call as "incoming call",
and react to it.

Pure accident that it works - must be some weird modem that listens to fax
tones all the time, and "recognizes" your DTMF tones as "hey, I have to
pick up now!".

Vgetty *is* supposed to wait for 3 RINGs.  Look into the vgetty log file
to see what really happens - we wouldn't know.

Hmmm.  This isn't really useful, because it shows the modem
initialization, but not your *problem*.  Please show a log file snippet
(debug level set to "-x6") from exactly the point in time where the modem
disturbed your call.
