Making a phone call?

Hi,

I'm using mgetty/vgetty since a couple of weeks. I can receive
and send faxes properly as well as I can register voice messages.
I read the FAQ and part of the archive. Also I subscribed and read the
mailing lists a couple of days. I figured I made a reasonable effort to
find an answer but I didn't. My problem is:

I'm at home and I share my phone line with the modem ( only one line).
When I try to make a phone call ( dialing out) the modem answers me and
plays the welcome message. This cause confusion because at one moment
I can hear the welcome message and the person at the other end.

The only solution I found to cure the problem was to comment the following
2 lines in voice.conf

#dtmf_len 30

#
# DTMF tone detection threshold in percent (0% to 100%). Increase this
# if the modem erroneously detects DTMF tones, decrease it if it fails to
# detect real ones. This is currently only supported by ZyXel modems
# with a ROM release of 6.12 or above. The default is 40%.
#

#dtmf_threshold 80

I'm not an expert. I would like to know if my solution is ok (proper)?
What would be a better solution?
and what are the potential consequences of my solution. (for the moment
I'm not using voice mail)?

By the way I would like to know(understand) what is the meaning and
exact role of DTMF tone? The modem isn't suppose to wait X rings (3 in my
case) before answering an incoming call, not and an outgoing one?

Maybe I missed something but I want to understand!
Thanks for your time and any help or references you could supply.
