Gert,

I am new at this of dialing to my red hat 6 linux machine using mgetty.
I have been trying
but it seems I cannot make it run. I will appreciate a lot if you have
the patience
to read this mail and help me. I am using a rockwell chip modem. The
modem even dials a
telephone number if I use minicom.

I have this line in my inittab

S0:2345:respawn:/sbin/mgetty /dev/ttyS0

however I cannot see the mgetty running when I do ps -ax (is that
normal??).
I know you have said 1000 times that mgetty should not be run from the
command line. However
I did

/sbin/mgetty -x 9 -r /dev/ttyS0

then I can see mgetty using ps -ax . If I do it, I can see in the
mgetty.log.ttyS0 that, the
login.config line

/AutoPPP/ - a_ppp /usr/sbin/pppd auth -chap +pap login kdebug 7 debug

starts up pppd but the process dies. I attribute this to the fact that
my telephone rings only four times
then automatically hangs up because the modem never answers tha call
(could it be that the modem
does not answer due to the -r option used above? Is there any option to
have the modem answering
as soon as it gets the first ring?

Thanks in advance

Antonio Martinez

NOTE

It says in the help files that the option -r should be used in direct
lines, however i can get
pppd started using it that way. I don get ppd started if i do not use -r
. The end of the mgetty.log.ttyS0
looks like
