Thanks, I already realised  for myself. (See my "recall" post which
obviously didn't reach you in time.)

Sorry, as I said:
I would rather keep things like they are and not fiddle around with
the
configuration of devices in my SuSe-Linux if possible.

The reason is:
I`m no expert and don`t know what follows if I change it according
to your advice. Remember it`s a Suse-Linux 5.3 Installation.
I mean with all the other services depending on /dev/modem.
And, I admit, I didn`t quit catch the argument there and it 
worked with /dev/modem.
