A program like this is included in mgetty's distribution. I think it's
based directly on postcript. Maybe a2ps could also be used some way.

I did that. If you want it I will have to clean it up first, since it's
5 years old code which has never seen the light :)

But it's blatantly slow. mgetty's solution is much simpler, and
works presumably pretty well.
