Dial in & out ???

Hi all (specially Gert - Thanks!)

I've been using mgetty for a couple of years without
any problems - til now. I have to set up a machine (slackware
4.0) to allow dialin access for remote maintenance using mgetty
and dialout using pppd to retrieve email - both on the same modem.
However if I have mgetty running, initiating pppd results in the
"OK" string not being returned by the modem. Disabling mgetty
returns pppd functionality.
So far my workaround is to have two inittabs (one with
an mgetty setting and one without) and the "mgettyless" version
is copied to inittab by the scripts that fire up ppp then the
mgetty version is copied back by ip-down script.

Surely there is a more sensible way? (I believe that
rerunning init -q will kill all serial connections??).

System is Slackware 4.0 from Infomagic, pppd is v2.3.7 and
mgetty is v1.1.24-Jul24.
Modem is internal Sportster Voice 33600 Fax rev 2.0 set for
port 1 (ttyS1).

TIA
