Zoom V.90 Serial Faxmodem?

This is bad - it seems that modem doesn't like to be accessed as 
a fax modem :-/

You could try "modem-type c2.0", but if it responds to AT+FCLASS=2.0
with "error" as well, it is not class 2/2.0 compliant and won't work
with mgetty.
