USR Sporster 28.8 / Sendfax setup

I am wondering if anyone has successfully set up the USR Sportster 28.8 to
successfully send a fax.

I have set up Mgetty, and the modem will accept incoming faxes, as well as
data calls with no problems. The problem I am having is that I cannot get
the modem to transmit a fax.  Here is what I am seeing in various logs:
( I am using faxrunq to send fax pages sent from Windows via Mgetty fax
monitor / lprfax script  - which works well btw...)

>From the console:

Trying faxdevice '/dev/ttyS2' ...OK
dialing xxx-yyyy ...OK                              (where xxx-yyyy is a
local  phone number)
Sending 'f1.g3'...

I now here the modem dial out, and my fax machine, which has the phone
number of xxx-yyyy , rings, and then goes into fax "receive" mode.
Approximately 5 seconds later, the fax machine stops, and displays an error
message.

The console now displays:
/usr/bin/sendfax Failed to transmit 'f1.g3'
Transmission error +FHNG:25  (DCS sent 3 times without response)
command exit with status 12

In /var/spool/fax/accnt.log    -  I see the following entry:

"protocol failure sending page"

I could post other details if needed - but am hoping I am missing something
obvious here.
