Several [stupid] questions

First of all I should beg your pardon for my questions
I know almost nothing about modem internals and networking so please be
patient

 First of all I'd like to know more about modems and related software
installation with as much details as possible. I've setup mgetty on my
USR Sportster 28K FaxModem, it answers calls, brings up PPP and so on.
But I did it not understanding why I should do smth this not that way.
It's very sad for me. Where can I read more about the subject?
 The second thing I'm interested in is the possibility of faxing and
ppp dialins on same USR Sp with same settings. Someone told me that I
can get with it either Fax machine or dial in server, not both :-(. Is
it true? Is there "The Success Story":-) anywhere? Or I should ask my
bosses to buy smth else right now :-)? Which modem is the best suited
for these tasks?
 Someone told me that there is Tiff G4 format which is the best (in
size) for faxes. What is it? Are converters from/to ordinary G3
available? Are they GPLed or under similar license?
 And last thing I badly wanna know about :-) is vgetty. Unfortunately
docs on it are [hm]...
 I wonder what I can do with it. An example: can I build a smart
answering machine, which will listen for additional dialtones and then,
according to these tones, start to replay received messages, record new
one or even start Fax Machine? :-) (Smth like what Dialogic cards do.
Unfortunately our company is very small and cannot buy such expensive
toys :-( :-) ). What modems can you recommend for this project (please
remember the previous phrase :-)). If it's possible but requires some
additional work I'm ready to do it.
