Mgetty uses select() only when waiting "for something to happen", and when
waiting for the line to clear. I don't know about vgetty, though.

Marc -- what about setting it that way in general? Any reasons why this
has to be set to c_cc[VTIME] > 0 ?

I definitely know that some modems can't do (or simply won't) RTS/CTS
handshake in fax mode. So I think it's reasonable to assume that many
behave the same way in voice mode.
But on the other hand, I have very little experience with voice mode, so
don't ask me :-)

It's at least a data point, so I think you should send it to Marc (or to
