USR sportster 33.6 woe

I just moved my USR sportster 33.6 to another machine, then moved it back
again, and now it fails under mgetty. The modem won't pickup calls.

Any clues? The software configuration did not change. The disk is not
full. (all that happened anywhere was that my nameserver machine went
down :-( in the meantime).. I stopped mgetty and ran minicom, and I can
talk to the modem OK. It all looks fine. Mgetty doesn't complain about
the chat sequence, so it must be iniitting the modem OK.

15 is SIGTERM, but I'm not sending it. I'm mystified. Nothing changed in
the config. I'll start debugging in earnest if there are no answers!
