Sounds like "cheap modems" or "poor line quality".
It's not too uncommon for el-cheapo modems to easily drop connection if
the phone line is a bit noisy. But since you didn't offer any data about
the kind of modem you are using, there is nothing we can comment on...

Mgetty will do just plain nothing while you're logged in (there is no
mgetty process at that time!!!!!).
