corrupt faxes

I have a problem with mgetty (0.99.3) and g3topbm. All faxes
are received correctly but when some of them are converted,
g3topbm generates many 'invalid code' error messages. The
'-r' option does not help either. 

As an example I have put a G3 file, as produced by mgetty and
what g3topbm (with ppmtogif) does to it onto our web server.
Most faxes come out o.k., though. The occurance of the error
seems to depend on the remote mashine that sends the fax. 

I am using a USR Courier and Linux (kernel 2.0.30) if that is of
any relevance.
