Did you try to send a graphics, e.g. a gif as fax ?
Then gs will not be used, so you can eliminate that source.

What faxdriver from gs are you using ?
I had problems with faxg3, so I'm using dfaxlow/dfaxhigh
(search for GS_DRIVER_?? in faxspool script).

Well, viewfax displays just about anything.

I have one Idea left: Perhaps your Bit-Ordering (+FBO/+FBOR)
is wrong when sending faxes, I had a problem with that...
