modem recommendation

Hello,
A while ago I posted several questions about a project I was
considering using mgetty+sendfax (with vgetty) for. The feedback I
received was excellent and convinced me that vgetty will be able to
solve my problem.
At this point I hope for some similar high-quality feedback regarding
hardware. Can any of you that are experienced with vgetty recommend
a modem brand? I have read that there are some reported problems
with US Robotics modems-- is this correct? I would prefer to buy an
internal modem (for cost savings and reduced clutter), but if there
have been bad experiences with internals, I will get an external.
Put another way, I want to buy the least expensive modem I can that I
know will work with vgetty without a problem. At the same time, I
know buying an expensive modem doesn't mean I won't have problems.
I'm preparing to implement a relatively sophisticated voice mail
system and would like as little time as possible devoted to hardware
problems.
Thanks much for any help!
-john.
