Dave:
This verse is stating that the woman should not depend on
her outward
adorning to show that she loves the Lord. It wasn't
condemning the use of
gold or apparel. All he meant here was that her spirit
shows true
spirituality, not the fact that she uses gold, etc.

Me:
Brrrrrnnnn. Wrong answer. Paul and Peter both said "let
not" or "don't let" the woman's outward apperance be one of
gold .... They also make no statement like "let your works
OUT SHINE the Gold you wear" but they said SPECIFICALLY to
not wear it but to be clothed with good WORKS INSTEAD.

One can ligitamatelly apply the principle to men and the
unmarried of that day were under the authority of their
fathers who were respponsible for their attire.

One can also broaden this to anything a person wears that
interferes with their witness or that they personally have
pride in or is from their vainity. I wear a beard but not
from vainity but rather for convenience. This also doesn't
say that we are to care NOTHING for our apperance but to
keep it in proper perspective.

On the moustache question, the reason that it was
considered vanity was that they became the "rage" after the
fashion of Clark Gabel. It WAS vanity to imitate this man
to be considered good looking. There was a similar
practice with Elvis' sideburns. After a time however the
ligitamate reasons to call a thing vain are LOST and only
the RULE is preserved.

There comes a point however that what a person wears on the
outside makes an UNMISTAKABLE statement of what is inside.
I asked my daughter once just what she wanted people to
think when they looked at her and she told me. I then
asked her to look at herself and to judge the message that
her attire was send out.
She didn't change her dress much but at least she is aware
of the principle. We have to look at what our outside says
about our insides. This is a PERSONAL thing and the Chruch
can only address those issues of LEWD dress and may then
ask a person to
EXAMINE their motives. The Chruch cannot legislate
vainity.
Paul and Peter gave us the guidelines of what is blatantly
unacceptable.
