With all due respect Bro. Steven, you missed this one a
mile. The verb tense used by Bro. Reed indicates that it
is he (Andy) that is confounded (stumped) by teenagers.
Put another way he is saying that dealing with teenagers is
"confounding" to him.

When I was a teen, I had to admit that many of the things
my friends and I did were confusing, not least of all to
ourselves.

There was no slur. I love teenagers. I don't understand
them and didn't when I was one, but I love them. We all
need help but teens have pressure from the inside, the
outside, their friends, their enemies, their parents, the
school, the Church... When you are a teen you are too big
to play and too big to cry but too young to drive and no
one respects your opinion. It's rough and many don't
survive. All this is bound to make you do "weird" things
sometimes. It is hard for us to understand sometimes,
that's all. No one is blaming.
