Hello Crystal,

I am sending a copy of a study of tongues for your perusal, Sorry the
layout changed when I pasted it.....

Tongues

What is the correct usage of tongues in the church? What is the
role that tongues play in the church? What is appropriate and
unappropraite concerning the speaking of tongues?

Three employments of Tongues

I.	Tongues as a evidence or sign.

	A.	Mark 16:15-18 And he said unto them, Go ye into all
the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He
that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he
that believeth not shall be damned. And these signs
shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they
cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;
They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any
deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay
hands on the sick, and they shall recover.

	B.	Acts 10:44-48 While Peter yet spake these words, the
Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word. And
they of the circumcision which believed were
astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on
the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy
Ghost. For they heard them speak with tongues, and
magnify God. Then answered Peter, Can any man forbid
water, that these should not be baptized, which have
received the Holy Ghost as well as we? And he
commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord.

	C.	Acts 11:15-17 And as I began to speak, the Holy Ghost
fell on them, as on us at the beginning. (16) Then
remembered I the word of the Lord, how that he said,
John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be
baptized with the Holy Ghost. (17) Forasmuch then as
God gave them the like gift as {he did} unto us, who
believed on the Lord Jesus Christ; what was I, that I
could withstand God?

		1.	Acts 2:1-4 And when the day of Pentecost was
fully come, they were all with one accord in one
place. And suddenly there came a sound from
heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled
all the house where they were sitting. And there
appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire,
and it sat upon each of them. And they were all
filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak
with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them
utterance.

		2.	Matthew 3:11 I indeed baptize you with water unto
repentance: but he that cometh after me is
mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to
bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost,
and {with} fire:

	D.	ACT 2:33 Therefore being by the right hand of God
exalted, and having received of the Father the Promise
of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye
now see and hear.

	E.	Acts 19:1-6 And it came to pass, that, while Apollos
was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper
coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples,
He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost
since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not
so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost. And
he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And
they said, Unto John's baptism. Then said Paul, John
verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying
unto the people, that they should believe on him which
should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. When
they heard {this}, they were baptized in the name of
the Lord Jesus. (6) And when Paul had laid {his} hands
upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake
with tongues, and prophesied.

	F.	Acts 8:12-16 But when they believed Philip preaching
the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name
of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and
women. Then Simon himself believed also: and when he
was baptized, he continued with Philip, and wondered,
beholding the miracles and signs which were done. (14)
Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard
that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent
unto them Peter and John: Who, when they were come
down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy
Ghost: (16) (For as yet he was fallen upon none of
them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord
Jesus.)

II. Tongues employed in prayer in communing with God.

	A.	1Corinthians 14:2 For he that speaketh in an {unknown}
tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man
understandeth {him}; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh
mysteries.

	B.	1Corinthians 14:14-15 For if I pray in an {unknown}
tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is
unfruitful. What is it then? I will pray with the
spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I
will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the
understanding also.

	C.	Romans 8:26 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our
infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as
we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for
us with groanings which cannot be uttered.

	D.	Jude 1:20 But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on
your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost,

III. Tongues as a gift for the edification of the church.

	A.	1Corinthians 12:28-30 And God hath set some in the
church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly
teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings,
helps, governments, diversities of tongues. {Are} all
apostles? {are} all prophets? {are} all teachers? {are}
all workers of miracles? Have all the gifts of
healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret?

	B.	1Corinthians 14:26-28 How is it then, brethren? when
ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a
doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an
interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying.
If any man speak in an {unknown} tongue, {let it be} by
two, or at the most {by} three, and {that} by course;
and let one interpret. But if there be no interpreter,
let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak
to himself, and to God.
