hmmmm...interesting question....

the Gospel of John gives a lot of information about the Holy Ghost...
John 14
    called the Comforter (vs 16,26)
separates us from the world (vs 17)
    given for obedience (vs 23)
    teaches us (vs 26)
John 15
causes us to witness (vs 26, 27)
John 16
comforts the disciples in Jesus' absence (vs 6, 7)
will teach things later that Jesus could not teach them in His
    earthly ministry (vs 12,13)

We are also told that we will have power to witness (Acts 1:8)

IMHO I feel that there is a two fold purpose for God giving us the Holy
Ghost:

1) Without the Holy Ghost we are the same as the Israelites and we know
how well they were able to live for the Lord. Without the Spirit humans
have a very hard time putting flesh into subjection of the will of God.
The Holy Ghost gives us the ability to live for God, it transforms us
(Romans 12:1-2) and renews us (Titus 3:5). The guidance of the Holy
Ghost is like a turbo charged conscience and helps us overcome our
temptations of the flesh and live a life that is pleasing to the Lord.
In short it gives us the ability to get to heaven (I hope that does not
come across as works earning heaven, it is by Grace and Grace alone, but
there are things expected of us and the Holy Ghost gives us the power to
do those things).

2) Look at Peter, before the Holy Ghost he denied the Lord and really
was a coward in those few days after the last supper. After the Holy
Ghost he was the mouthpiece of the Church. He arose on the day of
Pentecost and preached, when before he would not even acknowledge that
he even knew the Lord. It gives us the power and the wisdom to show more
people the way to the Lord.

Let the flames begin :o)

Lord Bless;
