Theologians are like Jacob. Jacob labored for seven years to win Rachel
as his wife, and then had to labor seven more; but the years seemed
short because of his great love for Rachel. A theologian labors seven
times seven years, his/her entire life, for his Rachel, which is Wisdom.
Theologians are like Solomon, Solomon prayed for the gift of wisdom,
and his prayer was answered. With wisdom came all other blessings. A
theologian too prays for wisdom. But the answer to his/her prayer
comes slowly as days, weeks, months, and years, are spent studying God's
word and seeking God's wisdom that the church he/she loves might be
blessed.
Theologians are like Jeremiah. Jeremiah was consumed by the Word of God
and faced dire consequences for his passion. Try as he may to put the
Word of the Lord out of his mind and speak no more in his Name, Jeremiah
couldn't. There was a raging fire in his heart which controlled him
and compelled him to fulfill his calling. Theologians too are consumed
by the Word of God. Try as they may not to study God's Word, not to
write their thoughts, and not to speak of the Jesus the Word reveals
they can't. There is a raging fire in their hearts which compels them
to overlook all negative consequences and fulfill their calling. They
overcome all obstacles to serve their Christian community by presenting
and defending its faith.
Theologians are like John the Baptist before Herod. John knew that he
had a message from God for Herod. Even though Herod desired truth, he
desired the favor of Herodias and Salome more. Herod delivered them
John the Baptist's head on a platter. Theologians know they have a
message from God. But they also know that although the Church desires
truth it often desires to please men and organizations more.
Theologians are willingly to sacrifice their life and livelihood that
the Church might know the truth.
Theologians are like Jesus. Jesus spoke of the great things of God in
parables hoping that some might ask their meaning. To those who asked
he unfolded the mysteries of the Kingdom of God. Theologians speak of
the great things of God in ways that are often difficult and hard to
understand. They live in hope that some might ask the meaning of what
they are saying that they might unfold the mysteries of the Kingdom of
God which has been revealed to them.
Theologians are like the Apostle John. John passionately loved Jesus.
John rested his head on Jesus' breast. John wrote to the church to
tell them of the love and fellowship he had found in Jesus. Theologians
passionately love Jesus. They abide in intimate fellowship with Jesus.
They write to tell others of the love and fellowship they have found in
Jesus.
