The Sabbath is for Man

And it came to pass, that he went through the corn fields on the
sabbath day; and his disciples began, as they went, to pluck the ears of
corn. And the Pharisees said unto him, Behold, why do they on the sabbath
day that which is not lawful? And he said unto them, Have ye never read
what David did, when he had need, and was an hungred, he, and they that
were with him? How he went into the house of God in the days of Abiathar
the high priest, and did eat the shewbread, which is not lawful to eat
but for the priests, and gave also to them which were with him? And he
said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the
sabbath : Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath . (Mark
2:23-28)
I have been writing lately on the "rest" of God. This rest is not a
sabbath day, as there once was in Old Testament times, but now we have
the Holy Ghost which is our "rest".(Isaiah 28:11,12)
Now, this rest was made for man and man was not made for this rest. What
I am saying is that sometimes we get the cart before the horse. If we are
not careful, because of the flesh, we fall out of this rest into
condemnation and doubt. I suppose there have been times in every life of
a child of God that we find ourselves in this place.
Now it would seem to be a trick of the devil that when we find ourselves
in this place to keep us there by keeping our thoughts backwards. Once we
fall into condemnation, the devil will use every trick in the book to
keep us there. When the preacher starts preaching on the freedom of God,
in hopes to help us find it, we begin to hear accusations. "You aren't
free. You are bad. If you weren't so bad, you would still be free." And
sometimes, the preaching intended to set us free will help keep us
thinking wrong because of our own negative thoughts! What we need to
learn to do is turn our thoughts around.
The accuser of the brethren is the devil and his bunch. When we hear
accusations, we need to remember where they are coming from!!
The Pharisees criticized Jesus for picking and eating corn on the Sabbath
day. Jesus asked them if they remembered David who ate the shewbread that
was not lawful for him to eat? He told them that the *man was not made
for the sabbath, but the sabbath was made for man*!! This is a beautiful
concept! What we need to understand is that God's laws are here for our
benefit. We are not here to be kept in bondage and oppression under God's
laws!
There is a lawless spirit in our day that would prefer to be free from
any of God's laws. Jesus did not say that man was not made for the
sabbath to take all laws away from man, but to help man understand that
they are placed there because of the compassion and mercy of God. After
David ate the shewbread, he did not go around preaching that it was
lawful to eat shewbread! But he understood a concept that the laws are
for our benefit and God wants what is for our benefit and not what is for
our hurt. Yes, God will even bend some rules sometimes to help a soul in
desparate need. Does that mean the rules have changed? No. It means that
God in His love and compassion is Lord also of the Sabbath. He made the
rules for our benefit and he will bend them on very special occasions
(without changing them) for the benefit of the people he greatly loves.
What a great God we serve!
"That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted
and grounded in love, May be able to comprehend with all saints what is
the breadth , and length , and depth, and height; And to know the
love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all
the fulness of God. Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly
above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in
us, Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages,
world without end. Amen.
