It was recently said:
>Being Apostolic in the modern world means to "continue steadfastly in
>the apostles' doctrine" (Ac 2:42). The word "doctrine" has its origins
>in the Latin term "doctrina" , which is derived from the verb "doceo"
>teach. The Kings James Version uses doctrine to translate "didache"
(Mk
>4:2; Ac 2:42; and "didaskalia" (1Tm 4:13,16; 5:17; 2Tm 3:10,16).
Recent
>translations have chosen to translate "didache" and "didaskalia" as
>teaching. This avoids the connotation that these terms refer to a
>complete and systematic corpus of Christian doctrine which developed
>subsequent to the Apostolic era.
So doctrine is teaching...or the mass of information being taught. This
is consistant with what I have been saying. So "Being Apostolic in the
modern world means to "continue steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine"
(Ac 2:42). " so for a "modern Apostolic" be continue steadfastly
(never stop) in the (doctrine) teachings of the apositles.
I agree....
<snipped many great Biblical quotes>
>This is the teaching of the apostles is the apostolic proclamation of
>Jesus Christ. The apostolic teaching was not about doctrinal truths,
>about a systematic theology. The apostolic teaching was not about
>proving the existence of God from history or science. The apostolic
>teaching was not about proving the authority of the Bible. The
>apostolic teaching was about Jesus, what Jesus has done to human
>history, the salvation brought by Jesus. To be Apostolic in the modern
>world is to continue in the apostolic teaching. To be Apostolic is to
>tell the world about Jesus and the salvation he brings.
The Articles of Faith of my church mirror the UPC. They hold Jesus at
the focal point, the virgin birth, the earthly ministry, the death,
burial and resurrection. All these are at the center of our walk of
faith.
But I wonder about "apostolic teaching was not about doctrinal truths"
to use the given definition of doctrine...that statement becomes
"apostolic teaching was not about *teaching* truths" and this is wrong.
It was ALL about the truth of the teachings. That is the whole
point...whatever you TEACH is your DOCTRINE. You can not drop the term
doctrine (a classic move by the ecumenical movement to water down
importance of the Bible) and say that you teach! The truth, the apostles
doctrine (or teachings) is what Jesus gave to them after the
resurrection, it is what Paul received in his three years in the desert
after his conversion. It is what they taught, what they wrote about,
what they lived. These teachings are central to our walk, these
teachings are central to our witness, these teachings are central to our
spreading the gospel..in fact the gospel is part of you teachings.
The Apostles where teaching the correct way to fall into God's plan of
salvation, to access the promised Messiah...to say that teaching this
with being concerned about doctrinal truths is to say that you are not
concerned about teaching the truth! We are expected and required to
spread the Gospel and the do it in a manner consistent with the truth's
that was delivered to the men hand picked by God.
Lord Bless;
Bill
