Sound Doctrine

(These are excerpts from a message by Tom Barnes, a well known apostolic
preacher that God has greatly used.)

4:1  I charge [thee] therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who
shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom;  2 
Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke,
exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.  3  For the time will come
when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall
they heap to themselves teachers, having  itching   ears ;  4  And they
shall turn away [their]  ears  from the truth, and shall be turned unto
fables. 1 Tim 4:1-4

"These scriptures prove that we should teach doctrine. People often
prefer teachers that tickle their ears without teaching restrictions or
responsibility."

"Though love is one of the greatest and most powerful doctrines in the
Bible; when people do away with all doctrine except love they have done
away with the gospel that Jesus preached. That is another gospel, which
is not another. Do not listen to those who say "We don't have to be so
strict- we don't believe all of that" Paul said some would pervert the
gospel or change it.[some say] "You don't have to be baptized. Water does
not save anyone." If it does not matter, why do they object to our
baptism? It is the Name. The devil hates the Name and knows the name of
Jesus remits sin."

"Paul preached repentance, water baptism in Jesus Name, and the Holy
Ghost with speaking with other tongues. He admonished us if an angel
tells us differently, do not believe. He put double emphasis by saying it
twice. There is a curse on anyone who changes the gospel."

"The charismatics preach divine healing, gifts of the Spirit, the blood,
the Holy Ghost, speaking in tongues and love- all are doctrines that can
cause division. They are not truthful when they say, "We do not preach
doctrine."

"God only knows what they fellowship-drunks, gamblers, rock singers and
dancers. Some of these churches  in our town have wild dances in the
basements of some of our churches. It is all right to dance with another
man's wife, but don't preach Jesus Name. They do not know why it bothers
them; the devil knows and he agitates them. Some of the churches will
organize bingo and heavier gambling. They will allow anything but a
message on baptism in the Name of Jesus. Real doctrine sets us free. The
Bible said the truth will set us free. If the truth of His Name is not
preached , we will never be free."

17  Now I beseech you, brethren,  mark   them   which   cause  divisions
and offences contrary to the doctrine  which  ye have learned; and avoid 
them .  18  For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but
their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts
of the simple.  1 Cor. 16:17,18

"This scripture does not say worship with them, but avoid them. Many I
baptized that went back to their churches heard from me, "You will lose
out with God. Although you are thrilled about this One God, Jesus Name
message, if you go where it is not preached and people do not worship,
the light will grow dim. What will you do when you are moved to shout or
speak with tongues? The Bible is plain- 'Quench not the Spirit'. Later
they said, "Really, I don't think it makes that much difference." The
spirit of error takes over."

"Give ears ,O ye heavens, and I will speak; and hear O earth, the words
of my mouth. My doctrine shall drop as the rain, my speech shall distil
as the dew, as the small rain upon the tender herb, and as the showers
upon the grass."(Deut. 32:1,2) When people love this doctrine, it is like
rain falling or dew on the grass- wonderfully refreshing and life
giving."

"What does Jesus say about people who do not believe doctrine and all the
commandments and belive only in love "If ye love me , keep my
commandments."(John 14:15) If you love me, believe and preach my
doctrine. God said in one place, "I am sick of your love because you
don't do anything about it." If you love me you will keep my
commandments-you will obey; you will separate yourself from the world."
