A full page advertisement in yesterday's USA Today Newspaper
(check out http://www.usatoday.com/ for the type of content
they have) by Taco Bell announced they were doing their part
to reduce the U.S. national debt by purchasing the Liberty
Bell in Philadelphia, and that it would henceforth be called
the "Taco Liberty Bell."

Taco Bell is a pseudo-Mexican food fast-food chain. The
Liberty Bell is a famous symbol of U.S. freedom -- a big huge
bell. It's one of those "national treasure" kind of things.

The text of the ad says the "Taco Liberty Bell" will still
be accessible to the American public for viewing. Taco Bell
also indicates they hope their action will promote similar
actions by other corporations to help reduce the national
debt.

The familiar Taco Bell emblem was at the bottom of the ad,
except the Taco Bell bell has a crack in it.

The ad is a hoax, of course, being that it was published on
April Fools' Day. Nevertheless, Taco Bell and the National
Park Service both report receiving thousands of phone calls
asking if the ad was serious. I saw it and laughed out loud :-)

America Online also played a joke on its members -- they
reported that NASA announced the Galileo probe found Jupiter
"teaming" with life.
