When I was at Texas A&M U 10+ years ago, I had to show my
student I.D. to go in and take exams (presumably to cut
down on test-taking fraud).  It had the magnetic strip on
the back which was run through a scanner when I went to
eat at the cafeteria.  They undoubtably have several more
convenience features nowadays.

Issues about cards and PINS and I.D. numbers and stuff are
generally discussed quite a bit in the privacy oriented
discussion groups.  If you read those, I guarantee quite an
education for you!
