This Blood's For You

With weak and feeble efforts
The prisoner tried to stand
Bruised , so tired and hungry
As blood from his wounds there ran.

He stood there before the judge
The verdict he did await
For he was truly guilty
For refuge it was too late.

He bore upon him the charge
Of killing a neighbor man
Because he lost in his temper
And because his anger ran.

And so sorry now he was
But for him it was too late
Because the Law held the chalk
That wrote 'Guilty' on the slate.

So with tears upon his face
He had stood to take his fate
For the cross was all ready
To claim his life with such haste.

But right before the sentence
There came bursting in the room
The sentries with another
Prisoner they were to doom.

They said, 'Law let that man go'
'For here stands the man you want!'
'He said that he is guilty'
You will no more have to hunt!'

'We beat and sorely bruised him'
'Yet 'guilty' his words still rang'
'We know we have the right one'
'And so on a cross he'll hang.'

Barely had I heard the words
Then his head I seen him raise
His face was so ripped and torn
Like they'd beaten him for days.

I could not tell who it was
Only that he looked at me
In his eyes there was no fear
But love directed at me.

Through the blood caked on his face
And the bruises through and through
Faintly came his feeble words:
Of that 'This blood is for you'.

His words sent chills down my spine
As they yanked the man away
Spitting in the love-filled face
That had looked my very way.

The Law had gave me Freedom
Because he had took my place
Not because I was worthy
But because of one man's Grace.

Then left they all did yelling
Vile words like 'Crucify him!'
And made him bare his own cross
While still carrying my sin.

Then I heard his piercing cries
As his hand the nail went through
Then I heard the echoed words
Of that "This blood is for you".

Then I ran to where he was
Begging them to let him go
But they said that he must die
Because the Law had said so.

'Besides he says he's guilty'
'And even if he was not'
'He's chosen to take the death'
'And for you , Grace, he has bought.'

'So just run along young man'
'Because now you're wholly free'
'And please let us get to work'
'Nailing this man to this tree.'

And with that they swung again
And I heard his shrieking cry
As his blood ran down the cross
And darkness had filled the sky.

Then uplifted him they did
With a sign above his head
So that everyone could read
All my crimes for which it read.

Then the Law laughed with delight
As it's justice was fullfilled
For the balance had been paid
By another which was billed.

White hot tears ran down my face
I could scare believe my ears
As he lifted up his voice
And then these words did I hear..

'O Father please forgive them'
'For they know not what they do'
Then he died to echoed words
Of that "This blood is for You"
