Palestine National Council amends its charter

  JERUSALEM - The Palestine Liberation Organization's National
  Council has voted overwhelmingly to amend its charter in accord
  with its peace agreement with Israel. The 504-54 vote to delete
  anti-Israeli clauses from the PLO charter gives a boost to
  Israeli Prime Minister Shimon Peres as May 29 elections
  approach. "This is a meaningful change with historic
  dimensions," said Peres, who called PLO leader Yasser Arafat to
  congratulate him.
