I don't know the answer to that, though I imagine its been addressed by
Catholic theologians.  Note that statements that are considered
infallible (a) must have been made _ex cathedra_ (i.e. for the church),
and (b) must be agreed to by all their bishops.  The pope in and of
himself is not considered infallible.
